The Keys to the US Attack

Does anyone remember Landon Donovan playing against Germany in the 2002 World Cup? Landon Donovan was unstoppable. He was really young, full of confidence and breaking out all over the field. He tested Oliver Kahn a number of times. The only reason a couple of those shots didn’t go in was because Oliver Kahn in 2002 was a superman. Of course, in 2006 Landon Donovan was just average.

In the 2010 World Cup Landon Donovan is going to light it up. He has begun to take his soccer so seriously that he seems at the top of his game almost every match. Now we need to make sure that he gets close to the goal. We also need to make sure that opposing offenses can’t key in on him so easily. So, here’s one possible solution that also takes into account other offensive weapons.

Let’s rotate Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey during the games between right midfield and striker. Keep Jozy Altidore up top and let him work on and off with Donovan and Dempsey. By switching back and forth opposing defenses will have a tough time marking Donovan and Dempsey and also maintaining their shape.

This might lead to each player getting a little more space. It also puts both in dangerous situations. Neither player is ideal as a striker and both have the ability to cause problems on the wings. Of course both players are key players and have a nose for the goal. That is especially true of Clint Dempsey. Both of these players are experienced enough to try this out without screwing it up.

Later today we will see who Bob Bradley brings into his initial camp for the World Cup. Edson Buddle, Eddie Johnson, Herculez Gomez, or Charlie Davies may turn out to be good enough options to keep Dempsey or Donovan on the wings. We will see what Bob Bradley thinks. Where do you think that Donovan and Dempsey should play? Are we better off keeping them on the wings, and letting someone else play alongside Altidore? What do you think?

  1. Play a 4-5-1, with Altidore alone up front, play Dempsey on left wing mid, Donovan on the right, and let them alternately threaten the backline either on the ball or off the ball with service from the opposite wing or the central midfield.
