US Players Struggling to get to the World Cup

Charlie Davies

Charlie Davies gave an interview and was seen greeting his teammates at Sochaux in France. He is apparently running and finished with his surgeries. He says that he expects to be able to resume training within a month. It would then take him probably another month before he could step onto the field. If that timetable sticks, then we might see Charlie Davies play a reserve match by the end of April or beginning of May. Without further complications he could be on the plane to South Africa.

Oguchi Onyewu made a brief visit to the US National team camp over the past week. He participated in light training. He said that he expects to be exercising for at least another month before he can do full training. He said that he is taking it slow. That is good news. It sounds like he has a good chance of being on the plane to South Africa.

Maurice Edu came back from injury and made a start for Rangers in the Scottish Cup vs. St. Mirren. I watched part of the match, and I thought he looked sharp and aggressive. He played well in his defensive midfielder role by breaking up St. Mirren’s attacks. If Edu can keep going and getting starts, then he has a good shot at making the trip to South Africa.

DaMarcus Beasley also got some minutes after injury against Kilmarnock in a reserve match earlier this week. He played 70 minutes, so I could see him getting some playing time in a regular match some time soon. If he can continue the form he showed a few weeks ago before picking up an injury, then Beasley would provide an excellent, proven option for the National Team.

Freddy Adu scored against Skoda Xanthi and also got the start against AEK Athens. He didn’t play full matches, but he has been playing well. If he continues to start and play well, he may have a shot at making it to South Africa. He could be a wing option or forward option. Apparently he has shown some willingness to get back defensively. If his attitude keeps improving and he works hard, he could be a strong asset for the National Team.

Eddie Johnson also improved his case by going the full 90 minutes against AEK Athens. He hasn’t scored since his first goal, but he continues to play. If he can score a few more, then Eddie Johnson might gain the confidence to be dangerous for the National Team.

Kenny Cooper continues to make cameo appearances for Plymouth Argyle. He played 14 minutes in their latest match. So far he has not started a game. He is going to need to see the pitch more if he wants a shot at making the World Cup roster.
