Friends of the Earth criticize plans to offset World Cup travel emmissions

Asad Rehman, the senior international climate campaigner for Friends of the Earth, has criticized the plans of the England squad to offset the carbon emmissions from their travel to the 2010 World Cup. Said Rehman,

“We all love the beautiful game – but carbon offsetting is an own goal. It’s a total con which will do nothing to reduce the impact of the emissions of all these teams flying to the tournament.

It’s Africa which is already feeling the impacts of climate change – drought, flooding and unreliable rains are devastating lives across the continent.

These proposals should be left sitting firmly on the bench.”

More than half the squads going to the World Cup have pledged to offset the carbon emmissions resulting from their travel. Rehman made no comments about the hundred of thousands of fans who would also be flying to the tournament. Rehman, who is from England, made his remarks in Copenhagen, to which, one assumes, he walked and swam.
