Casa Soccer League / Local Leagues

Local league weekend preview

The biggest question facing local soccer leagues may not be who wins their fall seasons. Rather, it’s this:

Will it ever stop raining?

In the Casa Soccer League, Philly’s largest, more than half the fall season’s games have been rained out as an El Nino cycle has dropped buckets of rain on the Delaware Valley, apparently liking the region only enough to visit primarily on weekends. Leagues around the region are rescheduling games that were rained out, and Casa has been forced to collapse its postseason playoff tournament to four teams.

That makes the last two weeks of the regular season more important than usual, with teams fighting for one of four playoff spots per division. Teams who win the regular season or the playoff tournament gain promotion.

In Primera, spring champions Deportivo Arsenal are trying to close a four-point gap between them and first place West Philly FC, who have surprised many with their torrid fall pace, taking 16 points from seven matches. Of the two, West Philly has the tougher remaining schedule, facing mid-table teams Penn United this Saturday and Philly Soccer Firm next Saturday, and Arsenal still has a rainout to make up. Could the table flip before playoff time? A West Philly win will clinch a playoff spot, while six other teams could reasonably claim one of the last three playoff spots. Most Primera matches this week are 8:50 a.m., with Arsenal and Stony United the exception, at 2:35 p.m.

In Casa’s second division, a different scenario is playing out. Philly United, Real Optimus, and Cannons FC all sit within two points of each other at the top of the table, with each assured (or almost assured) of a playoff spot. Philly United sits in the driver’s seat in first place, but they have the toughest remaining schedule, taking on 4th place Philadelphia Athletic this week and 3rd place Cannons next week. The question coming into the season was whether the Cannons could fight their way back up to Primera after their shock relegation, and if they win their last two games, they might pull it off.

The two lower divisions remain in play too, each could see their regular season titles clinched tomorrow. Casa’s leading scorer, Lee Superville, could send his Organized Squad to a regular season title in the third division with a win tomorrow over second place United Nations FC. If UNFC can walk away with a win though, Organized Chaos would have to defeat or draw FC Zot next week to walk away with first place in the regular season.

Similarly, defensive stalwarts Park Towne United could clinch promotion in their first season with a win tomorrow over 9th place Sidewinders FC. PTU has given up only four goals through their first seven games.
