Philadelphians Abroad: Where the locals have landed

Want to know what all your favorite local players are doing on the field this year? Look no further than PSP’s regular rundown of regional players’ performances, known as Philadelphians Abroad. We keep tabs on local players from Philadelphia, south Jersey and Delaware on out to the Lehigh Valley and Harrisburg areas.

With the MLS season now underway, here’s a comprehensive list of Philadelphia-area players’ movements at home and around the world.

Moved to MLS

The following players are new to Major League Soccer, whether drafted or otherwise:

Steve Neumann, M/F, New Hope, Pa. — Selected by New England in the first round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft on January 16, 2014.

Jimmy Ockford, D, Yardley, Pa. — Selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft on January 16, 2014. Loaned to the New York Cosmos of the NASL.

Billy Schuler, F, Allentown, N.J. — Acquired by San Jose via weighted lottery on January 14, 2014 after parting ways with Hammarby of the Swedish Superettan.

Moved within MLS

These MLS players found new homes within the league.

Greg Cochrane, D, Holland, Pa. — Traded by Los Angeles to Chicago on Mar. 3 in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft .

Bobby Convey, M, Philadelphia, Pa.Traded by Toronto to New York on December 13, 2013 in exchange for a first-round pick (15th overall) in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft and a third-round pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.

Dan Gargan, D, Philadelphia, Pa. — Option declined by San Jose on Nov. 22, signed by Los Angeles on Feb. 28.

David Horst, D, Pine Grove, Pa. — Traded by Portland to Houston on Dec. 17 in exchange for a fourth-round pick (71st overall) in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft.

Jeff Parke, D, Downingtown, Pa. — Traded by Philadelphia to D.C. on Jan. 14 along with the No. 6 spot in the Allocation Order for Ethan White and the No. 1 spot in the Allocation Order.

Moved out of MLS

Next up are players who moved out of MLS to other leagues, or between teams around the world:

Alex DeJohn, D, Marlboro, N.J. — Joined TPS of the Finnish Veikkausliiga (Premier Division) from Ekenäs IF of the Finnish Kakkonen (Second Division).

Ryan Finley, F, Lumberton, N.J. — Reportedly on loan from Columbus to USL Pro affiliate Dayton Dutch Lions.

Corey Hertzog, F, Reading, Pa.Option declined by Vancouver on Nov. 28. Selected by Seattle in Stage 2, Round 2 of the 2013 MLS Re-Entry Draft on Dec.18. Signed by Orlando City of the USL Pro on Feb. 11.

Zarek Valentin, D, Lancaster, Pa. — Permanently transferred from Montreal to FK Bodø/Glimt of the Norwegian Tippeligaen (Elite Division) on Dec. 19. Season: 12 games, 12 starts, 6 clean sheets. Cup: 2 games, 2 starts, 1 clean sheet

Bobby Warshaw, D, Mechanicsburg, Pa. — Transferred from Dallas to GAIS of the Swedish Superettan on Feb. 26. Season: 8 games, 1 start, 1 clean sheet.

Retired

Over the offseason we saw the retirement of one of the players featured in last year’s Philly Abraod rundowns, but don’t worry, he won’t be going very far:

Chris Albright, D, Philadelphia, Pa.— Announced retirement on Oct. 23, has joined Philadelphia’s technical staff as the team’s Assistant Technical Director.

Finally, we have a group of players that we’ve featured in previous year’s Philly Abroad posts but have since fallen off our radar.  If you have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the men, please let us know in the comments section below.

Anthony Allison, F, Philadelphia, Pa. — Last with Umeå FC of the Swedish Division 1 North. Not currently on the team’s roster.

Tyler Bellamy, D, Hammonton, N.J. — Last with the Rochester Rhinos of the USL Pro.

Thomas Brandt, D, Palmyra, Pa. — Last with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Pro.

Drew Cost, M, West Chester, Pa. – Last with the Rocester Rhinos of the USL Pro in 2012.

Bill Gaudette, GK, Hummelstown, Pa. — Last with the New York Red Bulls and Puerto Rican MNT in 2012.

Pat Hannigan, GK, Philadelphia, Pa. — Last with the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL. Not currently on the team’s roster.

Ryan Heins, M, Medford, N.J. – Last with the Richmond Kickers of the USL Pro.

Stephen King, M, Medford, N.J. — Last with DC United in 2012.

J.T. Noone, M, Harrisburg, Pa. — Last with VSI Tampa Bay of the USL Pro. The team has ceased operations. Also playing with Baltimore Blast in MISL, which begins its championship series this week.

Jon Okafor, M, Verona, N.J. — Last with MYPA of the Finnish Veikkausliiga (Premier Division). Not currently on the team’s roster.

Mike Seamon, M, Rahway, N.J. — Last with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the USL Pro. Trialed with the Philadelphia Union during the preseason, but did not make the team.

    As of the end of 2013, Jeremiah White was playing locally for West Chester United of the United Soccer League. Here’s my story for TheCup.us about Open Cup qualifiers, of which White took part: http://thecup.us/2015-us-open-cup-qualifying-top-seed-west-chester-united-three-road-surprises-advance-to-eastern-pa-semifinals/

    He had an ankle injury that kept him out of the semifinals and final of Eastern PA qualifying. He is still on the team’s roster page: http://bit.ly/1lC92wz
