Last week the Philadelphia Union brought in a local guy to bolster their coaching staff. In the latest edition of the Philly Soccer Show, KYW Newsradio’s Greg Orlandini and PSP writer Eli Pearlman-Storch talk with Oreland, Pa. native Jim Curtin.

The former MLS defender (Chicago Fire and Chivas USA) worked with the team’s youth system last season and will be a fixture on the sidelines as an assistant to Manager John Hackworth in 2013. Curtin talks about his coaching philosophy and what it will be like working with Hackworth and the other staff. He also talks about how glad he was MLS has come to Philadelphia and that he is involved with the team.

Friday, Dec. 7 is the first phase of the MLS Re-entry Draft, where some option declined and out-of-contract players will be eligible to link up with new teams. In part two, Greg and Eli discuss some of the options for the Union on the list including fan favorite and former Union captain Danny Califf. Could the tattooed defender add some leadership to the young squad?

Another possible option is 24-year-old left back Rodney Wallace. A move like that could free up Gabriel Farfan to return to the midfield.

  1. Ed Farnsworth says:

Great interview with Curtin. I’m still not used to the coaching staff being able to open up and talk so freely about the team.

  2. Some day, will we begin to refer to this stable of coaches as the Nowak Coaching Tree. Like the players on the team, we all blessed with a talented group of young coaches in Hackworth, Burke, Vartughian and Curtin.

  3. This was a great interview! I’m hoping you guys keep the podcasts coming during the off-season. Doesn’t have to be weekly… unless you want it to be! 😉

  4. Paul Rupe 119er says:

    Great interview, welcome home Jim.
